Composting

A really pleasing part of this project is re-using kitchen 'waste'. It is amazing how much food we throw away. Not any more though. A bin is in the kitchen for food scraps, which gets taken out to the compost bin every couple of days or so. Lot's of coffee in this bin!

The outdoors compost bin was left by the previous owners. It's not the greatest bin in the world. It is falling apart, and it's hard to turn the compost over in. Nonetheless, it's a good start. We've just borrowed a book on composting from the library so we should be able to work something out for the longer term

You can see the plants that have sprung up next to the outdoors compost bin, thriving on the extra nutrients.

hey guys, I'm loving your blog! It's really exciting. I love composting too! It is so satifying and you can compost so much stuff! I haven't yet aquired the art of composting but apparently there is an art where you are using three compost bins and rotating or something like that. Jackie french has a great book on composting that inspired my freind to become an activist when she was in highschool. Is this a public blog yet? if so I'll put a link to it in my blog...

Hi Rach,
It's OK to let others know about it. It's going to slowly evolve from here. We've lent the ABC permaculture DVD to a friend who hasn't returned it yet. You're next on the list.

I've read a few books on composting and the 3 bin thing is the most common idea, although there are heaps of very different ideas about composting.

It's probably more relevant though if you have grass clippings to add and even a chipper to compost larger 'waste' like small branches.
